Not every vehicle falls within the parameters of a normal situation. Stock vehicles live within insurance systems and we can quickly quote these because the underwriters already know the average repair costs, vehicle value range, and more. This, combined with other variables like driver age and risk assessments combine to create an accurate quote in little time.
If you have a custom camper van, RV, or bus build that isn’t attached to a specific brand + model, it’s still possible to find Mexican liability and full coverage for your rig. It will take a little longer however and the information gathering phase means you will need to supply specific information.
Proving Value for Your Build
Ideally, you will document the build and maintain receipts for aftermarket parts. Proof of value is critical for the quote process. For anything aftermarket that isn’t custom, you can typically look up the value from a retail location. For anything custom however, receipts are essential.
Adding a custom welded aftermarket bumper? Keep the receipt.
Having cabinets and interior carpentry work done? Keep the receipts from your hired labor.
Without proof of the value, the underwriters have no means of determining replacement and repair costs. I advise my customers to photograph each receipt alongside the item. Put everything in a shareable digital file. This way, it’s accessible and easy to recall when needed.
Things You Need to Start a Camper Quote for Mexican Insurance
- Value of base vehicle. Check Kelley Blue Book values.
- Value of aftermarket parts and additions
- Total value for desired coverage
- List of contents and aftermarket parts with receipts
- Photos of specific aftermarket parts
- Photos of front, back, sides and interior of vehicle
Common Coverage Availability for Aftermarket Parts
Certain items are very similar to RVs and that means they often qualify for coverage. Others are easier to prove value as they are also common add-ons to trucks and other vehicles. Anything rare or unique will be more difficult to cover. You can always submit with proof of value in an itemized format. It never hurts to try but some things are just too difficult to cover.
Some common items that are eligible for coverage include:
- Awnings.
- Bumpers.
- Structural Elements
- Permanent Carpentry
More difficult coverages:
- Appliances. These fall into the add-on category and while they might qualify under a total loss, repairs and replacements are not common or easy to source.
- Contents. The loose items in your build are more difficult to insure. Camping equipment, personal items and even things like a wood stove that is attached will be difficult to insure. It’s not impossible but you should look at a separate contents specific policy that covers equipment.
Know Your Registration and Vehicle Classification
Outside of the custom additions and unique value items, your vehicle classification is an important factor in the quote process. How is the vehicle registered in your US state or Canadian province?

If it’s registered as a van, you won’t qualify for RV coverage. Ideally, bus builds and larger rigs are registered as RV’s to make them eligible for a wider range of coverages that are RV specific. Of course, you can always register a van or truck while pursuing extra coverage for the add-ons and build elements.

Remember, this is for camper vans, bus builds and custom campers. Stock vehicles with aftermarket parts can also fall within the category. For anything stock, simply use the existing Mexican car insurance quote form for instant results. For example, I have a pickup truck with a camper shell and a basic build out in the back. I insure my pickup truck and don’t bother with the build out. It’s more economical and the build value isn’t worth pursuing additional coverage.
So go ahead and think through your options before moving forward. Whenever you are ready, we are here to help you find Mexican insurance for camper vans and bus builds.
